A Peek into the Daily Routine of a Medical Device Sales Representative

Have you ever wondered what a typical day entails for a medical device sales rep? It's a question I encounter frequently, so let's delve into the daily rhythm and offer you a glimpse of what it's like.

Embracing Diversity

One of the unique aspects of this profession is the diversity in daily activities. No two days are identical, and even the most carefully planned schedule can undergo multiple revisions throughout the day. However, certain recurring tasks populate my weekly agenda:

  • Assisting in surgeries
  • Managing trays and equipment
  • Engaging in business meetings
  • Hosting prospect lunches
  • Delivering supplies to accounts
  • Placing orders
  • Participating in mandatory calls
  • Identifying key positions at prospect hospitals

A Day in the Life

Here's a snapshot of a typical day based on my personal experience:

  • 7 a.m.: Commence with a scheduled case (starts at 7:30 a.m.)
  • 9 a.m.: Retrieve trays from hospitals post-surgery
  • 9:30 a.m.: Distribute trays to a new account for future surgeries
  • 10 a.m.: Address account's supply requisites
  • 10:30 a.m.: Supply necessary items to the account
  • 11:30 a.m.: Engage in a lunch meeting with a prospect doctor
  • 1 p.m.: Partake in another scheduled case
  • 2 p.m.: Follow up with a new doctor
  • 3 p.m.: Attend to emails and correspondences
  • 3:30 p.m.: Receive notification for the next day's case
  • 4 p.m.: Wrap up daily calls and emails
  • 5 p.m.: Wind down for the day (while keeping the work phone accessible)

This sample day illustrates the dynamic nature of the role. Every day presents new challenges and tasks, influenced by the specific division and product being sold. Some divisions may require more extensive work hours and case coverage, while others follow a different cadence.

Despite occasional stress and long hours, working in Medical Device Sales is incredibly rewarding. The ability to adapt, plan strategically, and manage evolving priorities is crucial in this field.

Final Thoughts

Every day in medical device sales is an opportunity for growth and impact. Embrace the challenges, stay adaptable, and keep pushing towards excellence.
