Army to Medical Device Sales with Maddox Hargett

Today we have a very special guest: Maddox Hargett. Maddox is a 27-year-old veteran, husband, father, and now a medical device sales rep at one of the largest companies in the world. His journey from military service to this role is inspiring and packed with lessons for anyone aiming to break into this competitive industry.

Let’s dive into his incredible story.

Meet Maddox

Maddox grew up in a small Mississippi town, went to Mississippi State University, and enlisted in the military right after graduation. Despite the challenges of military life, he always planned his next move.

“I’ve always wanted to be part of something bigger than myself,” Maddox says. “But I knew I’d only serve one contract. I wanted to prepare for what came next.”

That forward-thinking mindset led him to medical device sales. He spent over a year preparing while still serving, balancing his military duties, family life, and career goals.

The Power of Preparation

Maddox believes in being the most prepared person in the room. Whether it was the military or medical sales, he went all in:

  • Networking Early: He started building connections before he was even eligible to apply for roles.
  • Learning the Industry: Maddox didn’t just research; he sought out the good, bad, and ugly from those already in the field.
  • Staying Consistent: “There were days I didn’t get any replies on LinkedIn,” Maddox admits. “But I kept going because I knew it only takes one conversation to change everything.”

Patience Pays Off

Maddox’s journey wasn’t fast or easy. He joined the New to Medical Device Sales program in early 2023, knowing he couldn’t even apply for jobs until late 2024.

“Some months, I couldn’t even work on the course because of deployments,” Maddox recalls. “But when I had time, I dove in and used the resources to prepare.”

His hard work paid off in a storybook ending: on the same day he was officially discharged from the military, Maddox received a job offer from one of the top medical device companies.

Maddox’s Top Tips for Breaking In

Maddox shared his advice for aspiring medical sales reps:

  1. Commit Fully: “If you’re serious, go all in. Prepare, learn, and network.”
  2. Leverage Networking: “Reach out to people on LinkedIn and follow up. Build real connections, not just check off boxes.”
  3. Be Patient and Persistent: “Rejections happen, but stay consistent. It only takes one yes.”
  4. Care About the Mission: “You have to care about the patient and the impact you’re making. That’s what keeps you motivated on tough days.”

Final Thoughts

Maddox’s story is a testament to the power of preparation, perseverance, and a clear vision. From balancing military service and family life to landing his dream job, he’s proof that hard work and intentionality pay off.

To anyone doubting whether they can do it, Maddox says: “If you want it badly enough, you’ll find a way to make it happen.”
