Everybody Starts Somewhere In Medical Device Sales

I want to talk about something we all face: starting from scratch. Whether you’re new to the field or making a career change, remember—everybody starts somewhere.

Embrace the Learning Curve

We all start as rookies. No matter how much experience you have in other areas, medical device sales is a new ball game. I recently had a conversation with one of our mentees who came from a clinical background. He felt like an imposter at times because he wasn’t familiar with the sales side. Here’s what I told him: everyone starts somewhere. Even if you’re new, that’s okay. The key is to embrace the learning curve and focus on getting better every day.

When I first broke into medical device sales, I had experience as a personal trainer and in building relationships, but I was completely new to the sales aspect. I was a rookie, and it took time to adjust. Now, with experience under my belt, I’m able to guide others through what I’ve already learned.

It's Okay to Make Mistakes

You’re going to make mistakes—trust me, I’ve made plenty! Early on, I sent the typical “Can I pick your brain?” messages, which I now tell you not to do. But that’s how you learn. The goal is not to be perfect from day one; it’s to get better every day and learn from your experiences. Give yourself grace. Don’t get discouraged because you’re new. Being a rookie doesn’t last forever, but it’s a necessary step in the process.

Give Yourself Grace, But Keep Improving

If you’ve been applying for jobs or interviewing for months without success, it’s easy to feel defeated. But don’t beat yourself up for not knowing everything. Medical device sales is a complex industry, and each company has a different process. From Medtronic to Stryker to DePuy, every organization has its own way of doing things. You’re not supposed to know everything right away.

What you can do is focus on small improvements each day. How can you communicate more effectively? How can you better prepare for interviews? Just like getting in shape, progress takes time. Be patient with yourself, keep learning, and know that it’s okay to be a rookie.

Key Takeaways

  1. Everyone Starts as a Rookie: No matter where you come from, starting something new means you’re going to make mistakes.
  2. Learn from Mistakes: Don’t feel bad for not knowing everything; instead, focus on improving every day.
  3. Give Yourself Grace: It’s okay to not be perfect right away. Keep learning and progressing.
