It Is Never The Right Time To Break Into Medical Device Sales
Today, we’re diving into some common struggles people face when trying to break into the industry or become successful in their first year. Whether you're just starting out or are already in the field, these tips will be super helpful.
The Reality of Breaking In
I talk to people daily who want to get into medical device sales. They often say, "I think I’m ready." My response? "Do you know you’re ready, or do you think you’re ready?" That uncertainty can be a huge barrier. Many don’t even realize how much they don’t know.
Think about this: If getting into medical device sales was as simple as A, B, C, you’d already be in. There’s a lot more to it, like D, E, F, and beyond. Similarly, many reps don’t know how to convert doctors or handle a lunch meeting. This lack of knowledge keeps them stuck.
Excuses vs. Action
I hear a lot of excuses, like "I’ll join the program in three months" or "I’m dealing with personal stuff right now." The reality? There’s never a perfect time. Life will always throw challenges your way. The key difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is action. Winners take action even when they're scared. They commit and make things happen.
Here’s a personal example: When I moved to Arizona with just $1,200 to my name, there was no perfect timing. I didn’t know anyone here, and it wasn’t easy. But taking that leap changed my life. If I had waited for the perfect time, I’d still be back in Iowa working landscaping, not happy in life. Sometimes you’ve got to jump and figure it out as you go.
Facing the Fear
You’ll face criticism and doubt, especially if you’re young or new. People might make backhanded comments or try to bring you down. Ignore them. Focus on your goals and don’t let negativity stop you.
Investing in Yourself
Many people try to break in for free, thinking they can figure it out alone. But investing in yourself is crucial. Consider this: You spent thousands on college, so why not invest in your career? Top performers, like professional athletes, always have coaches and mentors. They understand that investing in themselves is key to getting better.

Stop the Excuses
Excuses are what hold you back. Whether it's "I don't have the time" or "I can't afford it," these excuses keep you from reaching your full potential. Winners face their fears and take action. They understand that there’s always a way to make things work.
Life is Full of Challenges
Life will always have challenges. It’s how you handle them that matters. When I moved out here, not all of my family was supportive. I missed important family events. But making that tough choice allowed me to build a better future for myself and my family.
Believing in Yourself
Most people don’t believe in themselves enough. If you truly believe you can achieve your dreams, you’ll start living like you’ve already achieved them. This mindset shift can transform your life.
How to Win in Medical Device Sales
To succeed in medical device sales, or any field, you need to stop making excuses. Here’s what winners do:
- Set Clear Goals: Know what you want and go after it.
- Take Action: Don’t wait for the perfect time. Just start.
- Invest in Yourself: Get the training and support you need.
- Stay Positive: Focus on the good and keep pushing forward.
Final Thoughts
Remember, everything you want is on the other side of fear. Stop letting excuses hold you back. Believe in yourself, take action, and you’ll achieve more than you ever thought possible.
