Rest Is Important In Medical Device Sales
Hey everyone. Today, we’re talking about something that’s often overlooked—rest.
I’m currently in Venice, Italy, taking some time off, which inspired this. Rest is crucial in medical device sales, and it’s something we often forget. Being in this industry, we’re used to the hustle and constant grind, but taking breaks is just as important for long-term success.
Why Rest Matters
Medical device sales is a fast-paced world, and it’s easy to get caught up in the “go, go, go” mentality. But what happens when we slow down? For me, stepping away allows me to reset. I often come back with fresh ideas, solutions to long-standing problems, and a clearer perspective. It’s like those famous "shower thoughts"—when you're relaxed, that's when creativity hits.
I want to share some insights on why it’s so important to balance the hustle with rest.
The Hustle Is Necessary
I’m a big advocate for hustling, especially in your first year. When I started, I was all in—working 12-hour days, learning from others, and doing everything to get ahead. The more time and effort you put in, the faster you’ll grow. And yes, it worked for me. I went from no experience to a full-line rep and later to a regional manager in just a couple of years.
However, there’s a downside—burnout. Working 14-hour days isn’t sustainable long term. It’s important to recognize when it’s time to take a break and recharge.
The Benefits of Rest
Taking time off has done wonders for me. When I step away from my daily routine, I come back refreshed with new ideas. It helps to gain a broader perspective on problems that felt overwhelming when I was in the thick of things. Whether it’s a difficult account or figuring out the next career move, everything becomes clearer.
One trip in particular, after losing a close friend, changed my perspective on work-life balance. That moment helped me realize how crucial it is to take breaks, reconnect with what matters, and come back stronger.
Build Downtime into Your Schedule
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you have to plan your downtime. It’s easy to keep grinding, thinking there’s always more to do. But if you don’t take time off, you’ll burn out, and your performance will suffer. Med device sales is a marathon, not a sprint.
You might think, “I can’t take time off—I’ll miss a sale.” Trust me, the work will still be there when you get back, and you’ll be in a better place mentally to tackle it.
Final Thoughts
Hustling is essential, especially in your early years, but remember—rest is just as crucial. Taking breaks allows you to recharge and come back with more energy and clarity.
